Trumbull County’s leaders are aware that there is a major issue with addiction in the area. The County has taken measures within the region to ensure safety and clean streets. Such as across the whole of the Youngstown region, with reports indicating instances where drug abuse is on the rise or fall. It is not all bad news, though. The NIH has reported that overdose deaths related to prescription opiates decreased by 25%, from 4,293 in 2017 to 3,237 in 2018. Deaths involving synthetic opiates (other than methadone) decreased 20%, and heroin-related deaths decreased by 28%, from 1,000 in 2017 to 721 in 2018.
In spite of these promising figures, the COVID-19 pandemic seems to have had a negative impact on the opioid crisis in Trumbull County in 2020. There were 90 opiate-related overdose deaths in May 2020 and 107 in June 2020, which are the highest numbers seen in the area since the deadliest year in 2017. Even though these numbers are daunting, help is at hand. There is always hope for anyone to overcome an opioid addiction; no matter how severe it may be.
