Managing Withdrawal Symptoms with Medical Detox
When you first stop using drugs or alcohol after prolonged use, you may notice some negative side effects which could make you more vulnerable to relapse in order to feel better. Because we know that your brain adapts to drug use over time – and your body works hard to process the toxic chemicals you are putting into it, a “new normal” is created within your body. When the drugs are removed, your body takes time to return to a normal state and re-balance. This is when withdrawal occurs.
Dependent on the drug of choice, and how long and how much you’ve used, withdrawal symptoms will vary from person to person and can last anywhere between 3-10 days, after which, you enter a phase of post-acute withdrawal.
Managing these symptoms is a crucial first step in recovery. Without professional help, many people have difficulty handling the uncomfortable physical and emotional aspects of withdrawal, which leads to high rates of relapse.
